Ulta Matte Lip Cream Review

Matte lips are my everything, especially during the cooler seasons. Yes, the brisk air is out to chap my lips, and I am here to graciously accept it. In that spirit, I decided to pick up the Ulta Matte Lip Creams, while they were on a buy 1, get 2 free sale about a month or two ago. They typically retail for $9, but are currently on a buy 2, get 1 free sale until Dec. 31st!

The lip creams come in a long, glass type tube with an angled doe foot applicator attached for ease of use. I am a huge fan of the applicator and have found it good for both precision and large sweeps of product. There is 0.12 oz of product in each tube. For comparison, the NYX Soft Matte Lip Creams, which run for $5.99 have 0.27 oz of product. The tubes are both the same width, but the Ulta Matte Lip Creams are much longer, which makes me wonder where the rest of that space is going since they have nearly half the amount of product. You are getting more product than in a Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick (0.08 oz) or the Anastasia Beverly Hills line (0.11 oz).

The actual application of these lipsticks is pretty phenomenal for 2 out of the 3 shades. The formula is thinner than a NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream, but thicker than every other actual liquid formula that I’ve tried. Courageous and Passionate both give you excellent and even color payoff in 1 swipe, though I usually do 2 coats to reach peak pigmentation. Tinder tends to be a lot more streaky and patchy, though some of the problems can be resolved by using a lip liner with it and then blending the lip cream in with your finger, rather than with the applicator alone.

Passionate after about 4 hours of wear

In terms of actual wear, they all do a pretty great job. After about 5-8 minuntes they dry down completely matte, but because they are a cream formula, the drying process doesn’t suck the moisture out of your lips. They aren’t transfer proof, but the color won’t really fade as long as nothing touches your mouth. Plus, reapplication with all colors is a breeze and it looks just as smooth as your original coats.

The only beef I have with these lip creams is that they aren’t completely true to color. Courageous is described as a “medium bluish brown” and looks much darker online. In real life, it’s more of a mauvey brown shade. I love the color and it’s my favorite out of my 3 shades, but it definitely did not match my initial expectations.

At the end of the day, I am a huge fan of these lipsticks. I’ve been trying out a bunch of drugstore liquid lipstick formulas and these are the best thus far! They aren’t drying at all, last super long, and have the most seamless reapplication. The only downside is that you aren’t getting a whole lot of product. Fortunately, Ulta’s stream of never-ending sales makes replacing them a cost effective process!

Winter Red Lip Guide

Whether you’re prepping for a holiday party, snazzy Instagram photos with with the fam, or a trip to your neighborhood market, nothing says seasonally appropriate like a red lip! Here are some of my favorite red lips perfect for every aesthetic!

Passionate Ulta Matte Lip Cream

I wish this had been my first red lip! It has a long wearing matte formula, without drying out the lips. It’s perfect for a Christmas dinner with Grandma! It’s bold enough to catch the eye, but you won’t hear her calling you immodest for wearing it due to it’s slightly pinky tone! Plus, it rings up at only $9 (and they’re on a buy 2, get 2 free sale until the 24th), so it’s a thrifty score.

Cruella NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil

This is a power red lip. It definitely hits more of those “true red” vibes that I look for, that Passionate misses out on, though it has a slight brick undertone. The matte formula let’s people know that I am serious about my holiday baking and am not hear to play games. It says “I baked the best pie this holiday season, and we all know it!” That’s good, because at $26, it needs to make a statementto the world about my talents and my beauty.

Dominatrix Lorac Alter Ego Lipstick

Drama, flair, and deepness. This is my favorite winter lip, because it matches the theatrics of the season! Dark at 4PM? You’ve got a lip that’s dark to match it! The strength of those cold winds? You’ve got a lip that’s strong to match it! Even the price is extra like the season coming in at $17.

Ravenclaw Inspired Makeup

Or yet in wise old Ravenclaw,
If you’ve a ready mind,
Where those of wit and learning,
Will always find their kind.

Your girl is still on her Harry Potter kick, and it will only to continue to grow as I am still in the process of re-reading the books. In October, I did a Slytherin inspired look and now I’m here for all the Ravenclaws! Because Ravenclaw has different house colors in the books and the films (blue and bronze vs. blue and silver), I decided to combine both elements into the look. Bronzey and blue lids with a silver hilight. Bone apple tea!

November Loves

It is officially December, but before I can fully embrace the Christmas spirit and cool winter blues I have to give November a loving goodbye! Here’s a shoutout to my fave beauty, fashion, and media things from this past month!

ColourPop SuperShock Shadow in Crenshaw

Unfortunately this product has actually been discontinued. It was one of the shadows released during ColourPop’s KaePop collaboration with Karrueche Tran and is right up my ally! I’m already a fan of warm toned browns, and this one is warm enough to add some colour to my eyes, but close enough to my skintone that it looks pretty natural. If you’re a deeper skinned diva and want to try out my go-to fall eye look, definitely go for sweeping a mid toned warm brown all over the lid and blend it into the crease.

Rimmel London Kate Sculpting Kit

I posted a review of this product up in July, and was not full on board with it back then. They tried me with their blush that’s really just a dark highlight and the poor color selection, but I’ve since made it work. The highlight gives the face a truly natural glow and the blush does as well, provided I sweep it all over my face. I don’t like my skin to be super blinged out, so this definitely works for me. As long as I think of it as just a highlight and contour palette, it’s an A- product (top scores are reserved from brands who put in real effort to be inclusive).

Tony Moly Facial Cleanser

I love trying out Korean skincare products! I feel like they have a lot more brands that really bring it with the packaging and find ways to make taking care of my face into an exciting activity. This facewash smells like my dad’s cousin’s wife’s banana pudding and gets all the excess makeup off my face!

Wet Seal Jeggings

Until the start of November, I did not even know that Wetseal even existed anymore! Iam so glad I stopped by their site though, because it is great! I bought these jeggings during a 40% off employee discount sale, so they only cost me about $16! Plus, they are “cropped” so they have a 27″ inseam, which is exactly the length of the short sized jeans I normally buy. There’s a short girl life hack for ya’ll!

White Oversized Cardigan

When I don’t want to break the bank, I like to shop my closet. I went home for Thanksgiving break and had a great time rediscovering some of my old clothing items. I love this cardigan because it’s neutral for easy outfit combos, ultra-cozy, and has a very academic looking patch on it! It says “this is my first class of the day, so don’t expect me to be at my best” like nothing else in my wardobe!

Sara Hartman Satellite (EP)

I had never heard of Sara Hartman until I heard “Monster Lead Me Home” on a Google Play fall playlist. It is definitely a top autumn jam and amazing strolling music. While “Monster Lead Me Home” is definitely my fave track, the entire EP is definitely worth a listen or ten. She sounds like a mix of Ellie Goulding and Edward Sharp and the Magnetic Zeros. If you’re into that indie-folksy-electric blend, definitely check her EP out!

Tess Christine

I don’t think I’ve mentioned my love for YouTube fashion vlogger Tess Christine before, but I’ll say it now: I am obsessed with Tess! Her style balances trendy and eclectic pieces without being too over-the-top. I don’t really like my outfits to be overly flashy, and she’s definitely given me a lot of inspiration and ideas for dressing to stand out in the crowd in a way that matches my casual lifestyle.

What’s your November love?
