NYX Matte Finish Makeup Setting Spray

I am on a huge setting spray kick! I used to think they were all hype, but I am now a believer who is out to explore the vastness of this liquid world! This time around I went for the NYX Matte Finish Makeup Setting Spray which retails for $8.

It gives a nice and classy vibe to my makeup station with the sleek black and white packaging. At the top is a push down spritzer, which sprays out a enough product to cover about 3/4 of your face in one pump. The best part is that even though it gives out a lot of the setting spray, it still creates a fine mist. All around, the packaging is a win, because you can spend less time spraying and more time playing with the rest of your makeup. It also has 2.03 fl oz which is about as much as you get in the e.l.f. Makeup Mist & Set.

Now on to the big ticket question: does it really mattify the face? In my opinion, no. I have mainly been using this with my Revlon ColorStay foundation, which leaves me with a natural to demi-matte finish, and my skin looks exactly the same regardless of if I add the spray or not. If you have oily skin like I do, then this may not be the answer to your makeup prayers. Despite that, it does what I look for in a setting spray. It melds all of my products together on my face to create a smooth image and remove any powderiness and dry patches. It also does slow the time it takes for my makeup to separate on my face, though not by a dramatic amount.

Ultimately, I think that this product is really just a basic setting spray. Nothing about it gets me #litforlife or makes it a standout in my beauty routine. I’m certainly not mad that I bought it, because it accomplishes what I seek for my setting sprays to do. That being said, I am more than likely not rushing to CVS to repurchase it when the bottle is empty.

For Those Who Won’t Let the Christmas Sweater Go

Moral of the story: investing in a sweater that you’ll only wear for one occasion is a waste of money.

Around the end of November/beginning of December, I took the plunge and finally ordered my first Christmas sweater. Every December my friends on campus always break out the cutest Christmas pieces. Whether they’re rocking a Santa Drake sweatshirt, a full-on charming elf ensembles, or a festive Tina Belcher, they’ve always inspired me to get into the spirit in the most American way possible: through capitalism and consumerism! So this time, I decided to go ChristmasLite and buy an understated $12 sweater from Forever 21. 1 month later and I’m glad I did it!

The sweater is has little prancing reindeer all around it and a fair isle print in it. Not only is fair isle a winter favorite of mine, but I love deer imagery – reindeer or not! It’s a lot more subtle than all of the other options I looked at and pairs well with nearly every item in my closet. Whenever I love an item in my closet, I love it and will wear it every chance I get. Ultimately, this means that even though Christmas is over, this sweater will still continue to get loving from me.

Tips for those who know they won’t let their holiday sweater go:

  • Don’t buy a $60 sweater
  • Stay away from anything that jingles
  • Wear it in January with no shame

Oily Royalty: The Best Foundation Routine for Oily Skin

Being a member of the Oily Royalty collective isn’t easy. Sometimes your foundation separates when your skin produces oil. Sometimes the sheen on your face reflects so much light that you accidentally boost your friends’ tans. Sometimes you spend 30 minutes on your best face, and 2 hours later it’s all ruined. Today I’m sharing how I leveled up my makeup game to become Oily Royalty through my new foundation routine!

Step 1: Skin Prep

The biggest lie told to members of the Oily Royalty family is that you don’t need to moisturize. This is a lie and everyone has to protect their skin’s hydration. The skin’s reaction to oil depletion and a potential for dryness in us oily folks, is to actually produce more oil. This is why I limit the amount I wash my face to a maximum of 2 times a day, and always follow with a moisturizer.

Step 2: Primer + Powder + Foundation

Primer is a great way to target your skin’s problem areas before you even add makeup to it. I start with a pore filling primer, though a mattifying primer is also a great option, and then blend a layer of loose setting powder over top. The powder fills in the face for a smoother application, and gives your foundation more clinging power. Not only will this extra layer give your foundation more protection from oil, it extends the wearing power too.

Step 3: Setting Spray + Blend

I love the way that setting spray magically melts all the makeup on my face together! The highlight, bronzer, and blush all meld into the foundation and leave my face looking A1! The spray also provides a boost of hydration, while it’s matte formula works to keep the skin shine free once it dries down. Typically, if I need a touch up throughout the day, I give my face a spritz and tap it down with my Real Techniques blending sponge.

And this is how I give my skin an oil protection boost! Be sure to leave some of your favorite skincare or makeup tips down below if you also have oily skin, because I’m always down for trying new things!

December Loves

December, I am not ready to let go!!! You brought me a 4.0 GPA, a slightly overpriced body lotion, another visit to a fancy theater (and my first live performance of The Nutcracker), and many different baked goods! To show my full December gratitude, I’ve made this post of my loves from the past month!

NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Cruella

You may have seen this pencil already in my Winter Red Lip Guide, and I was not over-exaggerating my love for it. I wore it to the Nutcracker, and it pairs nicely with a wing! Plus, I have a habit for buying red lips with a strong coral or pink undertone, and this one leans more toward a true red for me.

NYC Smooth Skin Loose Face Powder Translucent

This product’s packaging: TRASH. The actual powder: Golden! Actually, it’s white, then fairly translucent without a whole lot of wild flashblack. It’s also great to put on your face right after you apply primer, but before your foundation for maximum oil control!

Lorac Tantalizer Baked Bronzer

This has been a staple in my makeup routine for work. I use it like a shimmery blush and highlight, and pop a dash of it from my cheeks to my cheekbones for a natural glow.

Soap & Glory Smoothie Star Body Lotion

Soap & Glory is now sold at the Walgreens by my school and I am obsessed. They really tried it with their foundation shades, but they still hold a special place in my heart after trying their lipstick and sampling all of their lotions. I finally invested in this $12 one (way too much coin, in my opinion) and I love it. It has a very light and natural, but still slightly sweet scent. Plus, it does make the skin soft without being greasy.

Mary Kay TimeWise Even Complexion Mask

If you’ve been rocking with me since the beginning of this blog, then you already know about my love for this product. I didn’t bring it to school with me, but since I’m home for winter break, it is giving a revival. This mask boosted my credit score, payed off my tuition, and saved me from any tomfoolery in my Tinder messages (okay, it did none of that, but’s still pretty bomb).

Forever 21 Sweater

Christmas may have passed, but I spent a smooth $12 on this sweater, so it’s definitely going to be consistent in my collection. It’s very warm and oversized, which surprised me since I’ve been burned by F21 sweaters before (read: all the time). A definite bonus is that the print and color is very subtle, so it gives out more winter vibes than actual festive ones.

Bath & Body Works Caribbean Escape

I’m not a huge candle person. I own a wax warmer and am always putting it to use, but I’m trying to get more into candles. This has the strongest scent from my tiny candle collection, and I love the clean shape of the packaging. Plus, my birthday is in the summer, so the tropical and warm vibes of the candle makes it feel like everyday is my birthday.

What’s your December love?
