March Loves

MarchLoves2

The hills are alive with favorites! It’s the time of the month when we celebrate the old so I can move on to what the new month will bring. I now introduce to you my March Loves.

LA Girl Glide Gel Eyeliner Pencils

100_7487new

My YouTube queen KathleenLights is always rocking a funky waterline shade, but I’ve had issues finding a liner creamy, pigmented, and long lasting enough to replicate the look. I bought these on a whim (i.e. to meet the minimum cart price for an Ulta coupon code) and I’m so glad they actually work. Go with the black liner to keep it classic, or pop on a bright one to easily spice up a look!

Nine West Bag

100_7474new

How do you turn $70 into less than $2? At the Bargain Hunt, of course! The Bargain Hunt is a chain in the US, that’s essentially like a cheaper TJ Maxx. The main differences is, the prices continue to go down the longer a product it there. When this bag (which was at its original retailer for $69) was first stocked in store, it was $16. By the time I got my paws on it, it was down to $1.60!

Modern Romance by Aziz Ansari

100_7483new

I love Aziz Ansari and I love sociology! I’ve been wanting this book since it first released, but only got around to purchasing it in late February. I spent my spring break giving it a read through, and it’s definitely a winner! Aziz is hilarious and the book is actually full of research with dating experts, sociologists, charts, surveys, and focus groups from around the globe. Essentially, it’s like you’re in a random sociology elective course, without the stress of essays or the pressure to consistently show up. And, it’s way more fun!

Riverdale

riverdale

If you haven’t seen my Josie inspired makeup tutorial, then you’ve missed one of my new life changes: I have become a Riverdale stan! Riverdale is a new show on the CW (or Netflix if you live in Ireland and the UK) based off of the Archie comics. It’s one part murder mystery, one part high school musical, and one part teen drama. If you watch the show, tell me who your favorite character is (mine is Cheryl)!

What’s your March love?

Give Your Makeup a New Life: 5 New Uses for Your Eyeshadow

100_7463new

Whether you are a budget savvy diva or a high-end connoisseur, makeup products will always find a way to make a dent in your wallet. And, if you’re a product-hoarder like me, they can be hard to actually use up. Stretch your budget, whip out that palette you haven’t looked at in 3 months, and get ready to hit pan, my friends! Today I have 5 alternative uses for your eyeshadow! #BlessUp

Blur Out Your Wings

100_7331newnew

I have years of liner experience, but even I suffer from more bad liner days than good ones. Luckily, I came across this liner technique in a BeautyyBird video. You do the winged liner, smudge it with some black shadow, and boom – a smoky look. She did it to create a softer, more sultry wing; I do it to hide the fact that I’m a total flop. If it works, it works!

Fill in Your Brows

100_7309new

If I see a mid-tone to deep brown, it’s going in my eyebrows! Brow hair friendly shades show up more often in neutral palettes, where they’ll have your dusty taupes, warm toned browns, cool toned browns, and ashy greys. For the best application, use an angled liner brush (sometimes called an angled brow brush) and follow up with a spoolie.

Contour

100_7499new

Last year marks my first purchase of an actual contour powder. Up until that point, I had been dipping into my Lorac Unzipped palette and using the shade “Unspoken” in the hollows of my cheeks and down the sides of my nose. Play around with different shadows to find your perfect shade and pop all the ones that don’t work onto your lids and crease!

Mix Up Your Lip Color

Whether you want to try out a metallic lip, a bold tint, or add a bit of shine, eyeshadow is definitely a great way to test out a new lip look! I can’t bring myself to actually pay to use a novelty lipstick that I’ll probably only use 3 times. Instead, I may pat a shimmery gold or champagne shadow over lipstick for bronzey-metallic look or pat it into the center of a nude lip for some extra definition.

Highlight

100_7331new

I don’t go gaga over highlighting, so I can never bring myself to invest in highlighters. Instead of dropping $30 on highlighters that I definitely won’t hit pan on, I just use the light, shimmery shades I’d normally pack on the lid. For cream shadows, I use a stiff and densely packed synthetic brush. For pressed powders, I go for a fan brush or a small, flat tip brush.

Travel Skincare Kit

It’s all about the MCM, and I’m not talking about your Man Crush Monday! I recently ended my spring break during which, I was separated from my full skincare lineup. For traveling, I think it’s important to keep things simple! Break your routine down into a few components. For me, it goes a little bit like this: Mask, Cleanse, & Moisturize.

Mask

100_7026

Face masks are my life. Level up your break with some self created spa action! Plus, my face always has wild reactions to huge geographical changes, which can lead to an unexpected breakout. I say, pack your “all in one” mask so that you can win any battle your face wages against you.

Cleanse

100_7025

Just because you’re on a vacation, doesn’t mean you should go lax on having clean skin. Dirt is everywhere, and I can promise you that no makeup remover wipe has the strength to truly wash your face quite like water and a cleanser. I use this Tony Moly banana cleanser because it smells good and doesn’t spill inside my bags.

Moisturize

100_7028new.jpg

Happy, healthy, and hydrated skin is for everyone, which is why moisturizer is a key part of my travel skincare kit. Plus, changing geography can result in moving in altitude, moisture in the air, and wind strength. Stay prepared so that you can keep up with anything!

Now feel free to MCM (Mask, Cleanse, & Moisturize), with your MCM (Man-Crush Monday) and enjoy happy skin on the go!

Banana Facials: Tony Moly Magic Food Banana Cream Foam Cleanser – Review

I am currently in the middle of a Korean skincare kick and was so blessed to come across this banana infused cleanser from Tony Moly. Banana’s are my favorite fruit, and any claim that they have magical properties is one that I will cling to! So of course, when I saw this, I immediately added it to my cart, forked over my $12-$14 and was on my way! I’ve been using it for the past 4 months and finally feel secure in sharing my opinions on it!

100_7025

Here the product’s claims on Ulta:

Fresh food and magical effects! The moist Banana Cream Bubble Foam Cleanser with banana and honey delivers gloss-full nutrition. (Contains 10,000 ppm of Banana extracts. Nutritive sticky cream bubbles that contain delicious and soft banana extracts to remove skin wastes by touching the skin gently. Honey ingredients inside banana cream provides moisturizing effects when washing the face. Honey extracts leave the skin healthy and moisturized.

Nutrive Sticky Cream Bubbles: Check! I use about a pea sized amount whenever I wash my face. The cleanser is very thick, so a little goes a long way and creates a whole lot of lather. It clears away all of my leftover makeup residue, and I’ve even successfully washed off a full face of makeup with it a couple of times. It also smells like banana cream pie!

Moisturizing Effects: Not on this face! I always have to follow up with a moisturizer with this product. While it leaves my skin incredibly smooth to the touch, if I look into a mirror 5 minutes after its use all I can see is the Sahara Desert because my face is so dry. My skin always feels baby soft, but I’m definitely left pretty ashy.

Healthy Skin: Check! I have acne prone oily/combination skin, and my face has been a lot clearer since I began using this product. Right after I use it my skin feels very soft and looks radiant and healthy. Of course, I always have to follow up with toner and moisturizer to fight that post-cleansing ash, but if it works, it works!

Monday Motivation: Accomplishing Life’s Unconquerable Tasks

In my head, my fairly boring life is wildly stressful. There are large concerns floating in the back of my mind (e.g. my crazy-expensive tuition) that slowly become wrapped up in all of my smaller life issues (e.g. Riverdale is on a 3 week break, I have 20 pages of essay due tomorrow, and I need to start a job hunt). I’m constantly weighed down by all of these concerns and commitments, but the irony is that I often spend more time thinking than actually doing.

dark-sea-3

Typically, when I’m given a task all I can think is, “That’s way too much! Maybe other people can do that, but I’m not other people.” I’ll wake up every morning and stew and mourn over the loss of my life success to this unconquerable task. In fact, I’ll spend so much time stewing and mourning that my window of opportunity for doing the task will pass, and once again, I’m left discouraged. The truth is, I am afraid of the uncertainty of outcomes – the murky waters; they’re dark, they’re deep, and I’m terribly afraid of drowning. There’s no way to drown if you don’t dip in. Unfortunately, you can’t pass through waters you refuse to cross.

This Monday I challenge myself and all of you ignited with the fear of these murky waters to do two things: test the waters and be ready to forgive. You don’t have to dive head first into a specific task, but make a move toward it. Submerging one foot into those liquid depths puts you on the right path for a full body swim. More importantly, be ready to forgive yourself. We call them challenging tasks because, for one reason or another, they aren’t easy. Mishaps are to be expected, but should not be granted the power to banish all of your potential greatness. Move forward and move with kindness for yourself.

Riverdale Inspired Makeup: Josie

It’s been about 72 hours and I’ve transformed from an average gal into a major Riverdale stan! Surprisingly, it’s the perfect show for makeup fanatics, because they seem to have a booming relationship with Covergirl. There’s literally makeup product placement in every single episode, and they have tons of commercials that explain how the characters’ makeup relates to their identity within the show. Rad!

100_7383new

In that spirit, I decided to do a look inspired by the series! Episode 6 is super musical and the audience is blessed with a great performance from Josie & the Pussycats where Josie wears this ultra-fun blue eye.

Charcoal Goals: Freeman Charcoal and Black Sugar Polishing Mask Review

One surefire way to improve your week: try a new face mask! These past few months I’ve been trying out the Freeman Feeling Beautiful Charcoal & Black Sugar Polishing mask. It’s a dual action exfoliating and purifying mask that retails for $4.29 on Ulta. Essentially, it’s a two-for-one deal for under $5. Sign me up!

100_7263new

So here are the claims for this mask via Ulta:

Polution, debris, it’s a wonder skin can breathe! This unique mask and scrub works double time to detox skin. First, naturally purifying Activated Charcoal helps absorb oil and impurities without over-drying. Then, Black Sugar helps exfoliate away dulling skin cells for softness and clarity. Perfect for all skin types.

Detox + Purify: Apparently, charcoal has absorbent properties that allows it to clean out your skin. For that reason, I’m willing to believe in the purifying effects of this mask, especially since it can be a huge boost following my sub par facial cleansing routine.

Not Over-Drying: Most of my masks that help absorb oil are pretty moisture stripping, which I’m usually fine dealing with. This definitely is more forgiving in that respect and has never left me ashy. I still follow up with a moisturizer, but that’s just my post-mask policy.

Exfoliation: I have combination skin which can be pretty irritating, since my skin gets dry patches and oil buildup at the same time. It’s all around a gross feeling, but this has definitely helped buff these skin troubles away. I also appreciate the use of the sugar as the exfoliant, because it dissolves in water. I don’t have to worry about the product staying in the environment forever, and it’s a little more gentle on the skin, because you don’t actually exfoliate with it until you’ve exposed it to warm water and softened the grain!

100_7267

Extras: This is my second charcoal mask (my first was a bubble clay one), and once again it graced my face with some interesting feelings! You put it on, and it’s actually not that spreadable, so you’re never getting a thick layer on your face. Then, about 30 seconds into wear time, your face feels a little warm. It’s like you’re wrapped in a nice sugary and pleasantly scented blanket.

100_7253new

Ultimately, this is a great mask for under $5. It hasn’t been life changing, but it does live up to it’s claims (primarily because it doesn’t make that many). Plus, its super quick to use. You only leave it on for about 5 minutes. Slap it on your face, chill with a short YouTube video, and then exfoliate away!
